Embracing the Enduring Virtue of Honesty

By: Brent M. Longnecker

“Honesty is more than not lying. It is truth telling, truth speaking, truth living, and truth loving.”

-- James E. Faust

“No legacy is so rich as honesty.” -- William Shakespeare

Honesty is often referred to as the foundation of personal integrity and should have a significant place in all our lives. This timeless virtue forms the foundation of trust, authenticity, and ethical behavior. The value of honesty extends well beyond individual interactions. Honesty is key for us as a nation and community. It fosters healthy relationships, enabling forward progress and enhancing moral standards.

Many years ago, my consultancy, Longnecker & Associates, was working on our annual Texas Top Gun Report. It was arguably one of the most anticipated analyses we performed on all the publicly-traded companies and their CEOs, their performance, and their pay.

My Marketing Director was on point, and my partner and I had redone several drafts and months of amazing efforts by all. The books came in and I was excited; however, the Marketing Director's door stayed closed. After three hours of waiting, I saw the books, and they were nothing close to what I was told they would be. I was frustrated, but my Marketing Director shared it was all the printing company's fault. Well, as a good CEO, I called the printing company, and they told me my Marketing Director NEVER came out and proceeded to show me all of their correspondence. Their evidence clearly showed that my Marketing Director had been lying to us and was being reimbursed for mileage to non-existent meetings. I was incredibly disappointed. The owner of the printing company shared his frustration and let me know how bad my Marketing Director's lying to both of u made my company look.

Lying is truly unacceptable, and once this happened, all trust was lost. I waited twenty-four hours before I came to a final decision, but after that time period passed, I ultimately decided to terminate that employee. Lesson learned.

"Honesty is always the best policy." -- George Washington

Honesty promotes a culture of open-mindedness, where issues can be transferred into opportunities.

  6. Trust and Community: Honesty is the bedrock upon which trust is built. When we communicate truthfully, we foster a trusting reliability that builds relationships and enhances community. Relationships and community thrive on open and honest interactions, establishing feelings of security, empathy, and mutual understanding. By cultivating honesty from the start, we create an environment conducive to meaningful relationships and fostering all being valued and community prospering.

  7. Ethical Decision-Making: Honesty is crucial in ethical decision-making. When we are honest, we ensure our choices are based on accurate and reliable input, free from manipulation and deceit.
